Note: Hummingbird Telnet is the telnet software for Windows that is currently available at Indiana University through IUware.

After installing the Communications Software package from IUware, you can access Hummingbird Telnet by clicking the Start button and selecting Programs, then Communications Software. There will be a number of default telnet sessions already configured. To set up a telnet session to a new host, follow these instructions:

  1. From the Start menu, select Programs, then Communications Software, and then Telnet.
  2. In the Open Session window that appears, click the New Profile button.
  3. In the HostExplorer Session Info window that appears, provide the following information:
    1. In the "Profile Name" field, type a name for your session (e.g., the name of the server you wish to connect to).
    2. From the "Choose a profile type" drop-down menu, select a terminal type. In general, you should choose VT. For more information about what terminal type to select, see the Knowledge Base document Set a terminal type or terminal emulation
    3. In the "Host Name" field, you will need to enter either the IP address or the hostname of the server to which you would like to connect.

  4. You have now entered all the information needed to make a new telnet connection. Click the OK button to create your new session.

In the Open Session window, you should see the session you just created in the "Session Profiles" list. To connect, double-click the session's name.
