ARCHIVED: What is CardBus?

This content has been archived, and is no longer maintained by Indiana University. Information here may no longer be accurate, and links may no longer be available or reliable.

CardBus is the 32-bit version of the PCMCIA PC card standard. In addition to supporting a wider bus (32 bits instead of 16 bits), CardBus also supports bus mastering and works at speeds up to 33MHz. CardBus requires a notebook computer system running Windows 95 or later, or Unix or Linux. It is also available in Apple PowerBook models introduced in 1998 and later (i.e., second generation PowerBook G3s and newer). You need CardBus to use high-speed, high-bandwidth devices such as 100Mbps Ethernet LAN Adapters, videoconferencing and video capture hardware, and many SCSI cards.
