What is an SMTP server?

An SMTP server is a computer that receives outgoing mail messages from users and routes them to their intended recipients. All SMTP servers implement some version of the Simple Mail Transport Protocol. Messages often must pass through several servers to reach their destinations, and SMTP facilitates this.

The SMTP server address for all Indiana University campuses except IPFW (which has its own SMTP servers), is:

 mail-relay.iu.edu
