On the Jewel systems, the POP server will refuse a request to retrieve new mail when it occurs less than five minutes after your last one. This five minute timer will be reset each time you attempt to log in. This limitation was set in place to preserve system resources. If you would like to check for new mail more often than that, you may want to consider switching from POP to IMAP.
