ARCHIVED: In Windows NT 4.0, how do I set up TCP/IP Printing?

This content has been archived, and is no longer maintained by Indiana University. Information here may no longer be accurate, and links may no longer be available or reliable.

Note: For security and support reasons, UITS recommends using Windows 2000 Professional or Windows XP Professional, rather than NT Workstation 4.0, on Indiana University's network. Microsoft retired both mainstream and extended support for this version in June 2004, which means security updates are no longer being developed. To set up TCP/IP Printing in Windows NT 4.0, follow the instructions below. You will need the printer's IP address before you proceed.

First, you need to have Microsoft TCP/IP Printing Service installed. To install it, follow the steps below:

  1. Click Start and select Settings, then Control Panel. Double-click the Network icon.
  2. Select the Services tab, and then click the Add button.
  3. In the box under "Network Service:", select Microsoft TCP/IP Printing.
  4. Click OK.
  5. Restart the computer to start the service.

You also need to set up a printer port, as described below:

  1. Click Start and select Settings, then Printers.
  2. Double-click the Add Printer icon.
  3. Select My computer, and then click Next.
  4. Select Add Port to display the available port types. Choose the LPR- or LPD-compatible port.
  5. In the dialog box, enter the IP address for the printer.
  6. Select the LPR/LPD port with the printer IP address you just added.
  7. From this point, you will continue with the Add Printer Wizard. You have two options, letting Windows NT load the printer drivers or loading them yourself.

If you want Windows NT to load the printer drivers:

    1. Highlight the manufacturer on the left, highlight the printer on the right, and click Next.
    2. Give your printer a name, and, if you wish, choose to make it the default printer. Then click Next.
    3. Choose whether or not you want to share the printer with other users. Then click Next.
    4. Choose whether or not you want to print a test page and click Finish.

If you have the printer drivers on disk or have downloaded updated printer drivers:

    1. Select Have Disk.
    2. Choose the directory where the .inf file is and select Open. Then click OK.
    3. Give your printer a name, and, if you wish, choose to make it the default printer. Then click Next.
    4. Choose whether or not you want to share the printer with other users. Then click Next.
    5. Choose whether or not you want to print a test page and click Finish.
