TCP/IP File Sharing is most practical when the computer sharing files has a static IP address. To turn on this option in OS 9, from the Apple menu, select Control Panels, then File Sharing. On the Start/Stop tab, if you see "File Sharing off", click the Start button to enable File Sharing.

To log into the computer sharing files over TCP/IP, follow these steps:

  1. From the Apple menu, open the Chooser, and click the AppleShare icon.
  2. Click the Server IP Address... button. Enter the IP address of the computer to which you will be connecting, and then click Connect.
  3. In the dialog box, log in either as the owner of the computer with the computer's password or as a user set up in the Users and Groups portion of the File Sharing control panel.

Once you are logged in, you can share files between computers.

Note: If you are connecting to a network through a modem, transfer rates will be limited by your modem speed.
