ARCHIVED: In Windows 95, 98, Me, 2000, or XP, how do I configure my dial-up connection to connect to the Internet using a calling card?

If you would like to use a calling card with your dial-up connection to connect to the Internet in Windows 95, 98, Me, 2000, or XP, follow the appropriate steps below.

Windows XP

  1. From the Start menu, select Settings, then Network Connections.

    Note: If this doesn't match what you see, refer to ARCHIVED: Get around in Windows.

  2. Right-click the connection you would like to use, and then click Properties.
  3. Select the General tab, and then click the Dialing Rules button.

    Note: You may have to check the box labeled Use dialing rules before the Dialing Rules button becomes available. Highlight the appropriate connection, and then click Edit.

  4. Select the Calling Card tab and be sure your calling card is on the list. If your card does not appear on the list, click New, and then add your calling card name, account number, and PIN. If you need to make an international or long distance call, select the appropriate tab and fill in the name, account number, and PIN.
  5. Click Apply, and then click OK three times.

Windows 2000

  1. From the Start menu, select Settings, then Control Panel. Double-click Network and Dialup Connections.
  2. Right-click the icon of the appropriate connection and select Properties.
  3. Select the General tab, and then click the Rules button.

    Note: You may have to check the box labeled Use dialing rules before the Rules button becomes available.

  4. Highlight the appropriate location, and then click Edit.
  5. Select the Calling Card tab. If the card is not listed in the menu list, click New. In the "Calling Card Name", "Account Number", and "Personal Identification Number (PIN)" fields, enter the appropriate information from your calling card.
  6. Click Apply, and then click OK three times.

Windows Me

  1. From the desktop, double-click My Computer, then Control Panel, and then Dial-up Networking.
  2. Double-click the connection you would like to use, and then click Dial Properties.
  3. Click the Calling Card button. If you do not see this button, click New. Fill in the following:
    1. In the window that appears, below the "Create a new calling card named:" field, type a name for your calling card. Click OK, and then click OK again.
    2. In the "Personal ID Number" field, type the PIN associated with the calling card.
    3. If your calling card requires you to dial an access number for long distance, in the field next to "To use this calling card for long distance calls, I must dial this access number (phone number)", type the number.
    4. In the field labeled "To use this calling card for international calls, I must dial this access number (phone number)", type 011. Click OK.

  4. Make sure the checkbox next to For long distance calls, use this calling card: is selected.
  5. Click Apply, and then click OK.

Windows 98

  1. From the desktop, double-click the My Computer icon, and then double-click the Dial-up Networking icon.
  2. Double-click the connection you would like to use. Click Dial Properties, and then click Calling Card.
  3. In the window that appears, select For long distance calls, use this calling card: and from the drop-down menu, select your calling card.
  4. If your card is not listed, follow the steps below:
    1. Click Calling Card..., and then click New....
    2. A window will appear for a new calling card. Below the "Create a new calling card named:" field, type a name for your calling card, and then click OK.
    3. A window will appear that states the following: "You must enter dialing 'rules' for using this card. These rules will define how a phone number is dialed using this calling card. If this is not done correctly, the calling card may not be used in making calls." Click OK.
    4. In the "Personal ID Number" field, enter the PIN associated with your calling card.
    5. If your card requires you to dial an access number for long distance calls, type it in the space labeled "To use this calling card for long distance calls, I must dial this access number (phone number)".
    6. Next to "To use this calling card for international calls, I must dial this access number (phone number)", type 011.
    7. Click OK.
  5. Click Apply, and then click OK.

Windows 95

  1. From the desktop, double-click the My Computer icon, and then double-click Dial-up Networking.
  2. Double-click the connection you would like to use, and then click Dial Properties....
  3. Click the checkbox next to Dial using Calling Card:. If this is the first time you have selected this option, in the window that appears, from the drop-down menu, select the card you wish to use. If you have selected this option before, but you want to select a different calling card, click Change... and select your card from the drop-down menu. Click OK.
  4. If the calling card you want to use is not listed, follow the steps below:
    1. Click New.... Then, in the field under "Create a new calling card named:", type your calling card number, and then click OK.
    2. Click Advanced... and under "Calls within the same area code:", type your calling card number.
    3. If your card requires you to dial additional numbers for long distance or international calls, type these numbers in the appropriate fields.
    4. Click Close, and then click OK.
