ARCHIVED: In Windows 2000, how do I enable advanced power management?

Windows 2000 is designed to detect whether or not your computer has an ACPI BIOS, and then enable or disable advanced power management (APM) as appropriate. However, this detection process is not always successful. Most newer computers have an ACPI BIOS, so if your computer does not display some typical APM features, such as powering off on its own rather than requiring you to physically press the power button after shutting down Windows, you may need to enable APM. To do so, follow the instructions below:

  1. Click Start, then Settings, and then Control Panel.
  2. Double-click the Power Options icon. Click the APM tab.
  3. Select Enable Advanced Power Management support by clicking the checkbox.

Many computers that have power management features in their BIOS are not ACPI compliant. This results in the APM tab being missing in the Power Options Properties control panel. For many of these cases, a BIOS upgrade will bring the system into full ACPI compliance. Creating the APM tab after a BIOS upgrade requires reinstalling Windows 2000 over itself, as explained in Microsoft Help and Support article 246236.
