ARCHIVED: In ProCite, how do I create a new database?

This content has been archived, and is no longer maintained by Indiana University. Information here may no longer be accurate, and links may no longer be available or reliable.

Note: Indiana University no longer distributes ProCite. For bibliographic citation management at IU, UITS encourages ProCite users to switch to EndNote, which is available for Windows and Macintosh. EndNote, EndNote Web, and Reference Manager are available to all IU students, faculty, and staff for download from IUware.

To create a new database in ProCite, follow these steps:

  1. Open ProCite. From the File menu, select New.
  2. In the dialog box that appears, select ProCite Database and click OK.
  3. In the next dialog box, in the "File name:" field, enter a name for your new database.
  4. If you wish, in the "Save in:" field at the top of the dialog box, you may select a location in which to save the database.
  5. Click Save, then OK.

Note: Every database in ProCite consists of two linked files with different filename extensions: yourfilename.pdt is the primary database file (it contains your data); yourfilename.pdx is the database key file (it contains the indexes). When opening a ProCite database from a Windows folder, always double-click the file with the .pdt extension.
