Restore Two-Step Login accounts in the Duo Mobile app on a new device

On this page:

Overview

Duo Mobile lets you back up your Two-Step Login accounts on your Android or iOS device and recover the accounts on a new device. If you used the Duo Mobile app (version 3.17 or later) with an Android or iOS device, you can use the Duo Restore feature to set up your accounts on a new device.

Note:
Using Duo Restore still requires you to complete a Duo login, either with a call or text to a phone number that's already registered for Two-Step Login or a device enrolled for Two-Step Login.

Enable Duo Restore on a current device

To enable Duo Restore on a current device, follow the appropriate steps below.

Enable Duo Restore for Android

In Android, you will see a notification prompting you to enable backup on your device, unless you already dismissed it.

  1. Make sure you are running the latest version of the Duo Mobile app on your current Android device.
  2. Open the Duo Mobile app.
  3. Tap ENABLE NOW in the notification.

Optional: If you dismissed the "New Feature Available" notification, tap the overflow menu in the top right corner of the main accounts list. Then, tap Settings, and then Duo Restore.

  4. Turn on Duo Restore. You will then be prompted to select a Google account to store your backup on, and to grant Duo Mobile permission.
    Note:
Duo only stores non-sensitive account information on Google drive.

Enable Duo Restore for iOS

By default, apps like Duo Mobile are automatically backed up in iOS if you have iCloud backup enabled. Unless you have removed Duo Mobile from daily iCloud backups, you can restore your Duo accounts on a new device.

To ensure Duo Restore is enabled:

  1. Make sure you are running the latest version of the Duo Mobile app on your current iOS device.
  2. Back up your device to iCloud. Encrypted iTunes backups will also work. For help, see How to back up your iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch.
    Note:
Duo only stores non-sensitive account information on iCloud.
