Submit your W-9S form electronically

To submit your W-9S form electronically:

  1. Go to SSN/Educational Tax Credit Verification.
  2. On the Electronic W-9S for Education Credits page, choose the appropriate option to either confirm or update your Social Security number (SSN) information.
  3. When you're finished, click Save.

Your SSN is used for Internal Revenue Service (IRS) tax reporting as required in the Internal Revenue Code. The Taxpayer Relief Act of 1997 includes the Hope Scholarship and Lifetime Learning Tax Credits, which allows you to claim qualified educational expenses as tax credit on your federal tax return. Consequently, if you were enrolled at least half-time for at least one semester during the calendar year, or if you were enrolled in graduate-level courses, IU must file Form 1098-T to report the amount you were billed for tuition and related expenses, the payments you made, and any scholarships or grants you received. If you don't have an SSN on file, you'll be prompted to review this form yearly via an interrupt when logging into IU services.

For more, see IRS Publication 970, Tax Benefits for Education. If you have questions, submit the Office of the University Controller contact form.
