Note: The software discussed here is no longer in common use at IU, and UITS may no longer be able to verify this text's accuracy; additionally, the UITS Support Center may no longer have the materials needed to adequately support this software.

To install and use PC-Pine for Windows, a Pine desktop client that you can use to access your Cyrus mail account, you first need to download it from the Pine Information Center.

Click Download PC-Pine setup program to download PC-Pine to your computer. Make sure you know to which directory you are downloading the program (saving it to your desktop is probably the most convenient option).

Note that in Windows NT, 2000, and XP, you must be logged in with administrative privileges to install software.

Note:
Security of Information Technology Resources (IT-12) requires that you normally refrain from running your Windows computer as an administrator. For more, see About the principle of least privilege.

Once you've downloaded PC-Pine, continue with the following steps:

  1. Navigate to PC-Pine and double-click it to run setup (its icon should be named setup_pine_4.64).
  2. If you see a window stating "The publisher could not be verified. Are you sure you want to run this software?", click Yes or Run.
  3. In the window stating "This will install PC-Pine. Do you wish to continue?", click Yes.
  4. The Setup-PC-Pine Wizard will open. Click Next to proceed.
  5. On the next screen, you will need to read and agree to the license agreement. Click the radio button next to I accept the agreement and click Next. If you do not agree to the license agreement, you will not be able to install PC-Pine.
  6. Confirm that the install directory is set to C:\Program Files\PC-Pine. You will find this information in a text box below the statement "Select the folder where you would like PC-Pine to be installed, then click Next." If the install directory is not correct, click in the text box and then edit the directory path as needed.
  7. Click Next. If a window opens with the title Directory Exists, click Yes. (This occurs only if you have previously installed PC-Pine.)
  8. Under "Select the Start Menu folder in which you would like Setup to create the program's shortcuts, then click Next", enter the name of the Start menu folder where you want the PC-Pine shortcuts to be stored. By default, this is set to "PC-Pine", but you can change this without affecting the operation of PC-Pine.

Click Next to continue the installation.

  9. You have the option of creating a desktop icon and a Quick Launch icon. Check or uncheck each option as you wish and click Next.
  10. Click Install to continue the installation. The installer will copy files to disk, and the first part of the configuration will begin.

Part 1 of configuration: While still running the installer

A window titled "PC-Pine Configuration Setup" will open after you click Install. Follow these steps:

  1. Select the radio button next to Use local configuration file.
  2. Confirm that the file in the "Configuration file name:" field is C:\Program Files\PC-Pine\pinerc by clicking in the field and using the arrow buttons to view all of the field's contents.
  3. Make sure that the option Use this as the default PC-Pine Configuration is checked, and click OK.
  4. In the "Personal Name:" field, enter the name you want to have displayed in the "From:" field of email you send.
  5. In the "Email Address:" field, enter your email address (e.g., username@indiana.edu).
  6. In the "Mail Server:" field, type:
      imap.iu.edu/ssl/novalidate-cert
  7. Make sure that the radio button labeled This server is an IMAP server is selected.
  8. In the "Login name (optional):" field, enter your username.
  9. In the "SMTP Server:" field, enter mail-relay.iu.edu/ssl/novalidate-cert/user=username.

Replace username with your IU username. For example, if your username is dvader, you would enter:

      mail-relay.iu.edu/ssl/novalidate-cert/user=dvader
  10. If you would like PC-Pine to be your default email program, click the appropriate checkbox. Then click OK to finish this part of the configuration and go to the final screen of the install process.
  11. Uncheck the boxes next to Launch PC-Pine and View PC-Pine README. None of the three checkboxes should be checked when you click the Finish button.
  12. Click Finish to complete the installation and quit the installer.

Part 2 of configuration: After the installer is finished

  1. Click the Start button and select Programs or All Programs, then Accessories, and then Notepad.
  2. From the File menu, select Open....
  3. In the Open window, from the "Look in:" drop-down menu, select Local Disk (C:). From the "Files of type:" drop-down menu, select All Files.

  5. From the Edit menu, select Find....
  6. In the Find window, in the "Find what:" field, enter inbox-path.
  7. The line beginning with "inbox-path" will be highlighted. Click at the end of that line. Change the last word from inbox (lowercase) to INBOX (all uppercase).
  8. Click the Find window again to select it, and in the "Find what:" field, enter folder-collections.
  9. The line beginning with "folder-collections" will be highlighted. Click at the end of this line and enter:
      {imap.iu.edu/ssl/novalidate-cert/user=username}INBOX.[]

Replace username with your IU username. For example, if your username is dvader, you would enter:

      {imap.iu.edu/ssl/novalidate-cert/user=dvader}INBOX.[]
  10. From the File menu, select Save to save your changes.
  11. From the File menu, select Exit to close Notepad.
  12. From the Start menu, select Programs or All programs, then PC-Pine, and then PC-Pine again to open PC-Pine.
  13. Press e to exit the opening welcome message. This will be the only time you will need to complete this step. After you quit PC-Pine this time, you will not see the welcome message again.
  14. Type your IU Network ID passphrase and press Enter.

You will need to enter your passphrase each time you open PC-Pine. (PC-Pine may also ask for your passphrase at other times. Simply enter your IU Network ID passphrase when asked for it.)
