What it does

The Web Content tool allows site owners to add a link to an external website, or Web Content item, to the site's menubar.

Key concepts

Links: To set up a Web Content link, you can specify the URL for any website and a brief descriptive title. A link will appear in the menubar with the title you've chosen.

Multiple links: You may add multiple Web Content links to your menubar.

Things to consider

  • If you want to provide many links to websites for your course or project participants, you can avoid cluttering your menubar by listing most of them in the Resources tool; see ARCHIVED: Working with web links in Resources.
  • Departments, collaborations, or other groups may use the Web Content tool to provide a prominent link to their public worksites.
  • Some websites will automatically launch in a new window instead of within the Oncourse frame. Others may have coding that prevents them from opening within a frame (i.e., the page will take over the whole browser when you click the link, rather than displaying within the application).
  • Note: Recent versions of Firefox and Internet Explorer may block some links to external websites and embedded content, such as videos. For more, see ARCHIVED: Problems seeing linked websites or videos.
