ARCHIVED: With the BlackBerry handheld, how do I wirelessly add or remove applications?

With BlackBerry handheld software version 3.6 or later, you can wirelessly download third-party Java applications using the BlackBerry Browser. You can then manage, run, and delete these applications using the handheld application manager.

Two files are required to wirelessly download an application to the BlackBerry handheld:

  • .jad file: An application descriptor that provides information about the application and location of .cod files
  • .cod file: Compiled and packaged application code, in a BlackBerry-specific format

The BlackBerry browser uses the .jad file to discover applications for download. This .jad file provides a URL to the .cod files for the application. The .jad file is required; application .cod files cannot be downloaded directly if a .jad is unavailable.

Adding applications

You can download and install third-party applications on your device using various methods, including BlackBerry App World or BlackBerry Desktop Software.

You can also add applications using the browser on your BlackBerry handheld:

  1. Use the browser on the handheld to locate applications for download. Applications for the BlackBerry handheld are available at the BlackBerry Downloads web site.
  2. In the browser, find the link to an application (.jad file). Select the link to start the download and installation process.
  3. The browser will download the .jad file, and will display a dialog box with information about the application (e.g., name, vendor, version, and size). Click Cancel to cancel the installation process or Download to continue.

The application manager will verify that there is enough space on the handheld to install the program. If there is insufficient space, the installation will stop; otherwise, the handheld will display a message when the installation is complete.

  4. On the handheld Home screen, an icon for the application will appear. Click the icon to start the application.

Removing applications

To delete third-party applications from the handheld:

  1. In Options, to view the list of all applications installed on the handheld, click Applications.
  2. Click the Menu key, and select Properties.
  3. Click Delete, and then confirm the deletion.

Note: Only optional and third-party applications offer a Delete option. You cannot delete required BlackBerry applications from this screen.
