ARCHIVED: Using Opera 8.5 or later, how do I set up IMAP to access Cyrus mail?

To set up Opera 8.5 or later to access your Cyrus mail account at Indiana University using IMAP:

  1. In Opera, from the Tools menu, select Mail and chat accounts....

    Note: In Opera 11 or later, click on the Opera logo in the upper left corner, and then choose Mail and chat accounts.

  2. Click Yes if you see the following message: "You need to create an account before proceeding. Would you like to create one now?"
  3. Under "Select what kind of account you would like to create", choose IMAP, and then click Next >.

    Note: In Opera 10 and later, choose Email.

  4. Enter your name and email address, and then click Next >.

    Note: The "Organization" field is not a required field. If you see it, you may skip it.

  5. In the "Login name" and "Password" fields, enter your IU Network ID credentials. Click Next >.

    Note: In Opera 10 and later, choose IMAP under "Select an email account type".

  6. In the "Incoming server" field, enter imap.iu.edu. In the "Outgoing server" field, enter mail-relay.iu.edu. Click Finish.

    Note: If Opera's attempt to connect to your email fails, click Cancel once or twice to continue setting up the account.

  7. If Opera asks you to read through a tutorial, click No.
  8. From the Mail menu, select IMAP folders.
  9. In the window that appears, click Account, and then select Properties....
  10. Select the Servers tab.
  11. Under "Incoming IMAP server", check Secure connection (TLS), and change the port number to 993.
  12. Under "Outgoing SMTP server", check Secure connection (TLS), and leave the port at 25; if you cannot send email, try port 465. Change the authentication method to Auto, and enter your Network ID credentials again. Click OK.
  13. To close the Subscribe IMAP folders window, click OK again.
  14. To receive the contents of your inbox, click Check/Send. Once this step is finished, you will need to download your folders.
  15. Click Mail and IMAP folders....
  16. A listing of all of your folders should now appear in the window. Select the folders you'd like to download, and click OK.

    Note: In Opera 9.2x, this step may not be necessary because Opera attempts to subscribe to all folders.

  17. To download the email in your folders, click Check/Send.

Note: Depending on the speed of your Internet connection and the amount of mail in your email account, it could take several minutes to fully receive all your mail, especially if Opera is attempting to download all headers and messages from all folders. At the bottom of the screen on the left, Opera will display the progress of the messages.
