If your ArcGIS image displays as black

Note:
Esri has announced that ArcGIS Desktop (ArcMap and its associated suite of tools, including ArcGlobe, etc.) will no longer be available through the Education Site License beginning July 1, 2024. This means that all current ArcGIS Desktop (ArcMap) users will need to transition to ArcGIS Pro or ArcGIS Online by June 30, 2024. For further details, see ArcMap Retirement in Education Programs.

When you work with a raster file (such as GeoTIF, MrSID, or IMG) in ArcGIS for Desktop, the image may display in all black (no image). This happens when there are no statistics for the raster; statistics are required for your raster dataset to perform certain tasks, such as applying a contrast stretch or classifying your data. Correct this problem by calculating statistics for the raster; for instructions, see Raster data statistics from ArcGIS Help.
