ARCHIVED: About Microsoft Passport/Windows Live ID and IU email accounts
If you use an Indiana University email address (e.g., one that ends in
@indiana.edu
, @iu.edu
,
@iupui.edu
) as your login address for a
Microsoft service that uses a .NET Windows Live ID (also known as
Passport), such as MSN Messenger or Windows Messenger instant
messaging, you may have received a message from Microsoft telling you
to change the email address associated with your account. This
is a legitimate change request from Microsoft, and
you should act on the instructions in the message.
Why is this happening?
Because UITS is implementing the UniCom project using Microsoft's Office Communication Server (OCS), IM addresses cannot be duplicated on both Microsoft and IU systems. Thus, you will no longer be able to use an IU email address as your Microsoft Live ID.
What email address can I use instead?
- You can change your Live ID account to an existing non-IU
email address, such as a Gmail or Yahoo! account, as long as that account does
not already have a Live ID/Passport account associated with
it.
Note: Email addresses ending in
insightbb.com
will be retiring soon due to an agreement between Insight and Comcast. - You can create a new Hotmail account or an address ending in
@messengeruser.com
at Microsoft's Windows Live ID site.
How will this affect my accounts?
All contacts and access to sites related to your Messenger/Windows Live account should work normally once you change your email address, although it may take an hour for the change to take effect. Your contacts may need to delete and re-add your address after the change. This issue has no effect on your IU accounts.
Where can I get more information?
