Completed project: PGP Whole Disk Encryption

Primary UITS contact: Chris O'Donnell

Completed: January 28, 2011

Description: This project will provide a full disk encryption option for LSPs to deploy in their departments, protecting university data on devices such as laptop and desktop computers.

Outcome: The PGP service will be managed by IT Professional Services and Support and Support Center Tier 2, providing support and tools necessary for LSPs to safely deploy whole disk encryption on Windows, Mac, and Linux-based computers.

Milestones and status:

  • February 26, 2010: Targeted date for production, release to LSPs Completed
  • March 2010: Release to faculty and staff Completed
  • January 2011: Linux client release Postponed indefinitely
    • The current version of the Linux client is not in a supportable state. As newer versions are produced, we will periodically reassess them and release to IU when it becomes supportable and usable. In the meantime, there are usable and supportable alternatives for Linux.

Comment process: Though the PGP WDE deployment project is completed, we always welcome feedback from the community. Information regarding current usage and issues discovered in the field will help us continue to tailor the PGP service to best fit the needs of its many users at Indiana University and partnering institutions. To submit feedback, contact IT Professional Services and Support at itps@iu.edu.

Primary client: LSPs, faculty, and staff

Client impact: Better protection of university data, especially on laptop computers, which are vulnerable to loss or theft.
