ARCHIVED: Using myproxy-logon, why do I receive a "PAM authentication failed: Permission denied" error?

Using myproxy-logon to connect to a Extreme Science and Engineering Discovery Environment (XSEDE) resource, you may get the error, "PAM authentication failed: Permission denied".

This most likely means you entered an incorrect XSEDE password. To test the validity of your password:

  • Check whether or not you can log into the XSEDE User Portal.
  • Try running kinit from the command line:
      kinit username@TERAGRID.ORG

The "Permission denied" error is returned instead of a more user friendly message (e.g., "You've entered an incorrect password".) due to inflexibility in the PAM authentication program.
