Overview
To protect computers and data on the Indiana University network, UITS has enabled filters for attachments that have been known to carry viruses. The UITS attachment filters block the following file types, when sent either to or from an IU email account:
.ade .adp .app .asp .bas .bat .chm .cmd .com .cpl .crt .csh |
.exe .fxp .hlp .hta .htr .inf .ins .isp .jar .js .jse .ksh |
.lnk .mda .mdb .mde .mdt .mdw .mdz .msc .msi .msp .mst .ops |
.pcd .pif .prf .prg .reg .scf .scr .sct .shb .shs .url .vb |
.vbe .vbs .wsc .wsf .wsh |
Blocked attachments in inbound mail
When an email message with one of these attachments is sent to an IU email address, the IU Mail Delivery System (MAILER-DAEMON@indiana.edu
) discards the entire message, and sends the recipient the following:
Subject: [IU Mail Delivery System notification] Message with suspect attachment was intercepted
The following message contained a suspect attachment and could not be delivered. If you believe the sender was genuine and the attachment was not a virus, contact the sender to find another means of sharing the content. Note that many emailed viruses appear to come from legitimate correspondents.
Do not reply to this automated message. To reply to the original message, enter the correct address directly into the "To" field.

For ideas about gaining access to an attachment of a blocked file type, see Types of attachments blocked from IU email accounts.
Blocked attachments in outbound mail
When an email message with one of these attachments is sent from an IU email address, the IU Mail Delivery System (MAILER-DAEMON@indiana.edu
) discards the entire message, and provides the sending IU address the following notification:
Subject: [IU Mail Delivery System notification] Message with suspect attachment was intercepted
The following message contained an attachment of a blocked file type and could not be delivered. To send a legitimate attachment of a blocked file type, see https://kb.iu.edu/d/anop.
Do not reply to this automated message. To contact your correspondent, enter the correct address directly into the "To" field.

Alternatives to sending attachments
At IU, alternatives to sending files as attachments include:
- Secure Share: Secure Share provides students, faculty, and staff a way to share files with others via a web interface.
- Cloud storage: You can use one of IU's cloud storage platforms to share files. See Options for storing files at IU.
