About end of life for Windows XP

Beginning April 8, 2014, Microsoft discontinued support for Windows XP; as such, it will no longer receive critical security updates. To ensure the highest security standards, the UITS Support Center no longer registers Windows XP devices to the Indiana University network. UITS strongly recommends that you look into the options for replacing or upgrading your Windows XP computers for full compatibility with IU systems.

Since most computers running XP are several years old, most will be incapable of running Windows 7 or 8; refer to Windows 7 system requirements and Windows 8.1 system requirements.

If your XP computer appears to meet the system requirements, see At IU, how do I install Windows 8.x or 7?

Microsoft also provides Upgrade Assistants that can check to see if your Windows XP computer's installed programs and connected devices are compatible with Windows 7 or Windows 8.

  • Windows 7 Upgrade Assistant is available here. Windows XP Service Pack 2 and .NET Framework 2.0 or higher required.
  • Windows 8 Upgrade Assistant is available here. Windows XP Service Pack 3 required.

Note: Most programs and devices that work in Windows 8 will also work in Windows 8.1.
