ARCHIVED: On Quarry at IU, how do I use RATS?

This content has been archived, and is no longer maintained by Indiana University. Information here may no longer be accurate, and links may no longer be available or reliable.

To access RATS from Quarry at Indiana University, you need to load a RATS package to your shell environment using the following command:

  module load rats/8.1

You can also change your environment permanently by editing your ~/.modules file.

Then, to execute RATS, enter rats at the system prompt.

When the RATS ? prompt appears, enter your RATS command lines. To terminate the session, enter halt .

To run the job non-interactively, at the system prompt, create a file of RATS commands. Then, at the Unix prompt, enter:

  rats input output

Replace input with the name of the RATS command file, and replace output with the name of the output file you would like to create.

To run the above job as a background process, use a trailing ampersand (&) at the end of the line, for example:

  rats input output &

Again, replace input with the name of your RATS command file, and output with the name of the output file you would like to create.

Online help

A number of sample command files are stored in the /N/soft/rhel6/rats/8.1 directory. You may view, copy, or execute these files. RATS does not have an online help facility for the version on Quarry.

The RATS User's Manual is available for reference at the Business/SPEA Library, and at the UITS Research Analytics office.

Note: After seven years of production service, Indiana University's Quarry research computing cluster was decommissioned January 30, 2015. IU students, faculty, and staff can request accounts on Karst, IU's newest high-throughput computing cluster; for instructions, see ARCHIVED: Requesting an account. User data on Quarry has not be removed; you can access your old home directory data on Quarry from your account on any other IU research computing resource (see Available access to allocated and short-term storage capacity on IU's research systems). All software modules that were available on Quarry are available on Karst. If you have questions or concerns about Quarry's retirement, or need help, contact the High Performance Systems group.
