Upload professional captions to Kaltura


Overview

After receiving your professional caption files, you will need to upload them and remove the mechanical captions.

If multiple caption files for the same language are present, Kaltura will display the more accurate captions. However, the interactive transcript may display the transcript of the mechanical captions. To prevent this, the mechanical caption file should be removed.

Upload the professional caption file

  1. Log into Kaltura.
  2. Activate your name in the top right corner to open the user menu.
  3. Select My Media.
  4. Select the media for which you have professional captions.
  5. Activate the Actions button.
  6. Select Edit.
  7. Select the Captions tab.
  8. Select Upload captions file.
  9. In the upload dialog:
    1. Browse to find and select the caption file.
    2. Select the language of the captions.
    3. Choose the accuracy of the captions.
    4. Type a label to display in the caption options in the media player.
    5. Save.
  10. The upload dialog will remain open after saving. You may upload another captions file or select Cancel to close the dialog.

Remove the mechanical caption file

After uploading your professional captions file, you will want to remove the mechanical captions file.

  1. Log into Kaltura.
  2. Activate your name in the top right corner to open the user menu.
  3. Select My Media.
  4. Select the media for which you have professional captions.
  5. Activate the Actions button.
  6. Select Edit.
  7. Select the Captions tab.
  8. In the table of caption files, identify the mechanical caption file.
  9. Select Delete.
  10. In the confirmation dialog, select Delete.

Add a professional transcript

The interactive transcript uses the captions file and displays the captions during playback. You can also upload a separate professional transcript or other files that viewers can download.

  1. Log into Kaltura.
  2. Activate your name in the top right corner to open the user menu.
  3. Select My Media.
  4. Select the media for which you have professional transcripts or additional files.
  5. Activate the Actions button.
  6. Select Edit.
  7. Select the Attachments tab.
  8. Select Upload File.
  9. In the upload dialog:
    1. Select Select File to browse for the file.
    2. Enter a descriptive title in the Title field.
    3. Enter a description in the Description field.
    4. Save.

Supported file types

Kaltura supports the following caption file types:

  • SRT
  • DXFP
  • VTT

Transcripts are usually TXT files.

Supported file types for additional files include:

  • PPT, PPTX
  • PDF
  • PNG
  • JPG
  • DOC, DOCX
  • XLS, XLSX
