Microsoft Teams and Google Marketplace apps (add-ins)

On this page:

Overview

Due to the Restricted data and Critical data stored in the Microsoft Teams at IU and Google at IU storage environments, the marketplaces are currently limited. Follow the guidance below when considering whether to use third-party add-ins.

Microsoft and Google Marketplace add-in usage

Critical data and PHI

Add-ins cannot be used for Critical data or Protected Health information (PHI) unless approved through the Third Party Assessment (3PA) process (see Sharing institutional data with third parties). Contracts involving PHI or data classified as Critical must include specific contract language for data protection and privacy (that is, a Data Security Addendum (DSA) and a Business Associates Agreement).

Restricted data

Add-ins created by Microsoft can be used for Restricted data.

Add-ins created by other third parties cannot be used unless they are available in the Microsoft Teams marketplace and have been approved through the Third Party Assessment (3PA) process (see Sharing institutional data with third parties).

If you have questions about whether a specific add-in is approved to be used with institutional data classified as restricted or critical, contact iudata@iu.edu.

To browse a complete list of marketplace apps available, in Microsoft Teams, select Apps. However, be aware that an app being listed in the marketplace does not mean it is approved. It may still need to have an SSSP evaluation. For more, see About the Software and Services Selection Process (SSSP). (You will need to be logged into the Knowledge Base to view this document.)
