Overview

Thorium Reader is an app for reading ePub files and is designed for everyone, including people with print disabilities. Thorium is free to all users and is fully accessible using only the keyboard. Download Thorium for Windows 10, macOS, or Linux from EDRLab.

Use Thorium Reader

The Thorium Reader quickstart guide gives an overview of Thorium and introduces its structure and keystrokes. Note that while these keystrokes are specific to the app, the keystrokes that you would normally use with assistive technology can perform tasks specific to Thorium, such as finding a book on the bookshelf to read.

Change keystrokes

You can change Thorium Reader keystrokes if they conflict with keystrokes already used with specific assistive technology, such as screen readers.

  1. Select Settings.
  2. Under the "Keyboard shortcuts" heading, select Show.
  3. Navigate to the option you wish to change, and then press the down arrow to find the Edit button that pertains to that option.
    Note:
If you're using a screen reader, you can use the screen reader find command to look for a specific shortcut. The find command for each screen reader is listed below:
    • JAWS: Insert-Control-f
    • NVDA: Insert-Control-f
    • VoiceOver: Control-Option-f
  4. Press Enter on the Edit button for the keystroke you want to change.
  5. A series of suggestions in the form of checkboxes or buttons will appear. The checkbox or button pertains to the first part of your keystroke, such as Alt or Shift. Press the Spacebar to select a suggestion, or enter your own keystroke in the text field.
  6. Use the combo box/drop-down menu to select the second part of your keystroke, such as the up arrow.
  7. When you have selected your desired keystroke, select Save.
