Use Microsoft OneDrive for Canvas at IU assignments

Overview

The OneDrive integration with Canvas includes a suite of tools developed by Microsoft that provides integration between OneDrive and learning management systems like Canvas. In Canvas at IU, OneDrive files can be used in several places: Assignments, Modules, Collaborations, and embedded within the Rich Content Editor. The OneDrive integration is available in all Canvas courses.

Create a OneDrive cloud assignment

Cloud assignments are templated assignments. The instructor creates the template document (for example, a Word document with questions for the students to answer, or an Excel spreadsheet where students will manipulate data), and each student gets their own copy of the document that they can edit and submit. When students submit the assignment, their own copy gets submitted and is available to the educator in the SpeedGrader for assessment.

OneDrive allows you to use Office files (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) to provide assignment instructions to students or assignment templates for students to edit and submit.

  1. To add a templated assignment in Canvas, select External Tool as the "Submission Type", and then select Find.
  2. Select Microsoft OneDrive to open the OneDrive file picker.
  3. Select the file you want to serve as the assignment template, and then select Attach.
    Note:
This will attach the file and show the pop-up again.
  4. Click or tap Select to confirm the selected file.
  5. Select other options for Submission Attempts and Assign. Then click Save or Save & Publish.
Important:
You should not edit a OneDrive cloud assignment after it is published. If you edit it, a new document will be created and shared with students. If students have attempted the previous assignment and you share a new assignment, their previous work will be lost.

Create a templateless assignment

This type of assignment allows students to upload any file from their OneDrive account to submit for the assignment. Students are only able to upload Word, Excel and PowerPoint files.

  1. Create a new assignment in Canvas.
  2. Add assignment instructions.
  3. Select Online for the submission type.
  4. Select the File Uploads box.
  5. Select other options for Submission Attempts and Assign. Then Save or Save & Publish.

Collaborate using OneDrive

Collaborations allow students to work collaboratively on a given document. Students and educators can start a collaboration. The document under collaboration remains accessible to instructors even if the instructor is not added to the collaboration.

  1. To start, click Collaborations in the Navigation menu on the left side of your Canvas course.
  2. Click the blue +Collaboration button on the top right of the page, and select Microsoft OneDrive from the dropdown menu.
  3. Do one of the following:
    • Choose your type, enter your document name, and insert a description.
    • Click Select Existing Document. Then choose the file to collaborate on and click Select.
  4. Assign the collaboration to students and select Save.

Add Microsoft Office files to your course modules

OneDrive LTI allows educators to add Microsoft Office files to their Canvas course modules.

  1. Select the + (plus sign) icon on the top right of the module.
  2. Select External Tool from the dropdown.
  3. Choose Microsoft OneDrive from the list.
  4. Choose the file that you would like to add to the course module and click Select.
