Identify, remove, and report phishing attempts in Google at IU

On this page:

Overview

In a practice commonly known as phishing, interested parties may try to gain access to your sensitive data through several kinds of online scams. The following is an overview of a few different types of phishing attempts that could happen in Google at IU via shared content in Google Drive. You'll also find information on how to identify, remove, and report these phishing attempts.

For more about phishing scams, see Avoid phishing scams.

Google collaborations

Do not post sensitive information in Google (for example, typing your passphrase in a Google Doc). Proceed with caution when someone not affiliated with IU has shared something with you through Google Drive, including but not limited to: Google Docs, Google Sheets, Google Slides, Google Sites, or files via Google Drive. If you do not recognize the person who has shared the content with you, or you were not expecting this person to share content with you, you can remove the file from your Drive. Once you have removed the content, you can report it to Google.

What to do if you've been phished

If you think you've been phished, what you do next depends on the type of data that may have been exposed:

  • Your IU passphrase: Reset your IU passphrase.
  • Personal information such as DLN or credit card number: Contact the appropriate institution.
  • IU institutional data or data about others to which you have access: Notify the University Information Security Office immediately.
