Manage groups in ArcGIS Online

On this page:

Overview

In ArcGIS Online, the groups feature allows you to organize and share content with other group members. For more information, go to ArcGIS Online.

Anyone at IU can create and manage a group in IU's ArcGIS Online organization. However, the following types of groups require an Administrator or Facilitator role:

  • Shared Update groups
  • Groups that want to be available on open data sites

To request an Administrator create a Shared Update group for you, or if you are faculty or staff and would like to have your role changed to Facilitator, contact UITS GIS Support.

Create a group in ArcGIS Online

  1. Log into IU's ArcGIS Online organization.
  2. In the menu at the top, select Groups and then choose Create Group.
  3. Enter a "Name" and "Summary" for the group, and then choose the desired settings for "Group Membership".
  4. For "Who can be in this group?", if your group will include collaborators from outside IU, choose Partnered collaboration and my organization's members only. If your group won't include outside collaborators, choose My organization's members only.

Create a Shared Update group in ArcGIS Online

In ArcGIS Online, anyone with the Facilitator role can create Shared Update groups. In a Shared Update group, all members of that group can edit items shared with the group, regardless of who owns the item.

Note:
Shared Update groups cannot be enabled to allow members from "Any organization's members".

To create a Shared Update group, first follow the instructions on how to create a group above. At the end of the group creation form in the "Group designations" section, enable the "Shared update" option.
