Caller ID displays your number as potential spam

When making off-campus calls, caller ID may label your Indiana University phone number as a potential spam call. Unfortunately, there is no direct way to prevent this from happening.

Telecommunications carriers and cell phone companies control the variables and algorithms that determine whether a number is displayed as potential spam. If you make repeated outgoing calls (for example, for research purposes), the algorithms set by carriers will likely mark your calls as potential spam.

If feasible, you can encourage call recipients to add your number to their contacts. Once your number is added as a contact, the recipient's call ID will no longer mark your calls as potential spam.

Telecom and Network Services can issue you a new phone number free of charge, but the new number will likely be labeled as potential spam once repeated outgoing calls have been made.
