About IU's policy on using information technology resources for commercial advertisement

You may not use your Indiana University computer accounts or any other university information technology resource to advertise the products or services of any private for-profit enterprise or activity. This includes (but is not limited to) advertising in web pages, email, newsgroups, or any other information exchange media. The prohibition does not depend on whether or not the person doing or facilitating the advertising receives compensation for that activity in any way.

For example, while it would be acceptable for students to advertise one time on their personal web pages (or in newsgroups appropriate to the purpose) that they want to sell a bicycle, they may not advertise that they sell bicycles as an ongoing, revenue-generating activity.

Any student organization planning to use university resources to generate revenue through sponsorships or similar activities must first consult with either the Student Involvement and Leadership Center (IUB) or the equivalent campus office charged with advising the organization; see Contact your campus student affairs office.

Any department planning to use university resources to generate revenue through advertising, sponsorships, or similar activities must first consult with University Treasury Operations.

Any other organizational group or entity planning to use university resources to generate revenue through sponsorships or similar activities must first consult with the University Information Policy Office (UIPO), which will assist in gaining other necessary input and review.
