Phone numbers

There are two phone numbers for the IUB modem pools:

  • 856-5200 for two-hour access
  • 856-5202 for eight-hour access

Note: If you are dialing in from the IUB campus, you need to dial only 6-5200 or 6-5202.

There is one phone number for the IUPUI modem pools:

  • 278-5620 for four-hour access

OT/PPP and Apple Remote Access 3.0+

  1. From the Apple menu, select Control Panels, then Modem.
  2. In the "Connect via:" field, choose the appropriate port for your modem.
  3. From the list next to "Modem:", select your modem. If your modem isn't listed, try one of the Standard or Null Modem options.
  4. Close the control panel. Then, if you are prompted to save your current configuration, click Save.
  5. From the Apple menu, select Control Panels, and then either PPP (OT/PPP) or Remote Access (ARA 3.0+) .
  6. Click the Registered User button. If you want PPP to remember your passphrase, click the Save password button.
  7. Fill in the information as follows:
    • In the "Name:" field, type your Network ID username. If you leave this field empty, you will be prompted for your username when you dial in.
    • In the "Password:" field, type your Network ID passphrase. If you leave this field empty, you will be prompted for your passphrase when you dial in.
    • In the "Number:" field, type the dial-up number for your campus modem pool (see the phone numbers above).

  8. Click the Options... button, then click Redialing. You can set the number of times PPP redials and the length of time between redial attempts. Click the Protocols tab and make sure that Connect to a command-line host: is not checked. Click OK.
  9. If you wish to configure OT/PPP to dial using a different modem pool, click the File menu and choose Configurations.... Click the Duplicate... button to make a copy of your current configuration. You can then choose to make the copy active and change the number to the alternate number you have selected. You can switch between the modem pools through the Configuration menu item.
  10. Close the control panel and click Save to save your changes.
  11. When you want to connect, open the PPP control panel and click the Connect button.

FreePPP 2.5.x

  1. From the Apple menu, select Control Panels, then FreePPP Setup.
  2. Click the bottom left arrow to expand the window. Click the Accounts folder tab, and then click New.
  3. Fill in the information as follows:
    • In the "Server name:" field, type a name for your connection, such as IUB 2 hour or IUPUI 5620. What you type here isn't essential, but it should be descriptive.
    • In the "Phone number:" field, type the dial-up number for your campus modem pool (see the phone numbers above).
    • In the "Connect:" menu, select Directly.
    • In the "Username:" field, type your Network ID username. If you leave this field empty, you will be prompted when you dial in.
    • In the "Password:" field, type your Network ID passphrase. If you don't type anything, you will be prompted when you dial in.

  4. Click the Connection folder tab.
  5. Fill in the information as follows:
    • In the "Port Speed:" menu, if you have a 14.4Kbps modem, select 57600. If you have a 28.8Kbps or faster modem, select 115000.
    • In the "Flow Control:" menu, try CTS & RTS (DTR). This will work for most modems.
    • In the "Modem init string:" field, type whatever your modem manual says to use. If you aren't sure what this is, try at&f.

  6. Click OK.

To set up FreePPP 2.x for the other modem pools, repeat these steps, replacing the current number with the alternate number.

MacPPP and FreePPP 1.0.x

  1. From the Apple menu, select Control Panels, then ConfigPPP.
  2. At the bottom of the Control Panel window, click the New button.
  3. In the "PPP Server name:" field, type a name for your connection, such as IUB 2 hour or IUPUI 5620. What you type here isn't essential, but it should be descriptive. Click OK.
  4. Click the Config... button.
  5. Fill in the information as follows:
    • In the "Port Speed" menu, if you have a 14.4Kbps modem, choose 57.6Kbps. If you are using FreePPP 1.0.x, and you have a 28.8Kbps or faster modem, choose 115Kbps.
    • In the "Flow Control" menu, selecting CTS & RTS (DTR) will work with most modems.
    • In the "Phone num" field, type the dial-up number for your campus modem pool (see the phone numbers above).
    • In the "Modem Init" field, type whatever your modem manual says to use. If you're not sure what this is, type at&f.

  6. Click the Authentication button. Fill in the information as follows:
    • In the "Auth. ID" field, type your Network ID username. If you don't type anything, you will be prompted when you dial in.
    • In the "Password:" field, type your Network ID passphrase. If you don't type anything, you will be prompted when you dial in.

    Once you've filled out these fields, click OK.

  7. Click Done. You are now ready to try the new service.
