Check the storage space of your IU Exchange account

Overview

These instructions are for checking the amount of allotted storage space you have used in your Indiana University Exchange account.

Outlook for Windows

For a detailed list displaying the size of each folder in your mailbox:

  1. In Outlook, click File, and then Info.
  2. Select Tools, and then Mailbox Cleanup....
  3. Select View Mailbox Size.... In a few seconds your total mailbox and folder sizes will display. If your mailbox is on Exchange Online, it can take up to a minute or so for the space information to display.

Outlook for macOS

Note:
Outlook does not show how much storage space you have left; it only shows how big your folders are. You can check your actual quota in Outlook on the web, as shown below.

To check your usage in Outlook:

  1. In your mail folders list, right-click your Exchange mailbox. From the drop-down menu, choose Properties or Folder Properties.
  2. Click the Storage tab to view the size of each folder on the server.
  3. When you're finished, click OK.

macOS Mail

Note:
Mail does not show how much storage space you have left; it only shows how big your folders are. You can check your actual quota in Outlook on the web, as shown below.

To view your quota:

  1. If you cannot see your list of mail folders (such as your Inbox or sent messages), go to the View menu and select Show Mailbox List or Show Mailboxes.
  2. In the mailbox list in the left column of the mail window, Ctrl-click or right-click your Inbox, and in the contextual menu that appears, select Get Account Info.
  3. If you use Mail to access multiple accounts, make sure that your IU Exchange account is selected in the pop-up menu next to "Account:". Look under the Messages on Server tab for a summary of the amount of space your mail is taking up. It may take some time for the program to complete the summary.

Outlook on the web

Note:
Outlook on the web has the same functionality across major browsers in most cases. For help using Outlook on the web, in your Inbox, select ? (question mark) in the top right.
  1. Go to Outlook on the web and log in using username@iu.edu.
  2. In the upper right of the window, select the gear icon. At the bottom of the flyout window, choose View all Outlook settings.
  3. Select the General tab, and then the Storage tab to see your mailbox storage space.
