UITS Exchange administrators are moving the IU community from the Intel-based on-premises server running Microsoft Exchange Server 2013 Enterprise to Exchange Online.
Microsoft Exchange Online is a hosted messaging solution that delivers the capabilities of Microsoft Exchange Server as a cloud-based service, allowing you to access email, calendar, contacts, and tasks from your personal computer, the web, and mobile devices. Exchange Online integrates fully with Active Directory, enabling administrators to use group policies and other administration tools to manage its features across their environment. Though hosted by Microsoft, Exchange Online is still managed by the IU Exchange administrators and meets the same security and privacy guidelines as traditional, on-premises Exchange.
The move to Exchange Online will improve IU’s mail security by requiring all connections to mail to use two-factor authentication. The Microsoft 365 (formerly Office 365) platform also provides many advanced Threat Protection settings and other enhanced controls.
Exchange Online also integrates directly into Microsoft Teams at IU, allowing you to schedule meetings and see your Exchange calendar and free/busy information, all within the Microsoft Teams application. Other Microsoft 365 applications such as Power Automate can also take advantage of the account, storing attachments in Microsoft OneDrive at IU, or setting email triggers on activity.
