Before trying to send a fax in Windows 95 or Windows 98, you must make sure that the Microsoft Fax service is available on your computer. If Microsoft Exchange or Outlook is installed on your computer, see ARCHIVED: In Microsoft Outlook 97, 98, or 2000, or Exchange, how can I send or receive a fax? If not, or if you are not sure if Microsoft Fax is installed, follow the appropriate instructions below.

Windows 98

If Outlook 97 or 98 is installed on your computer and Microsoft Fax is not, you must first uninstall Outlook. Back up important Outlook information before continuing.

Uninstall Outlook

From the Start menu, select Settings, then Control Panel. Double-click Add/Remove Programs and proceed with the appropriate directions below:

For Outlook 98:

  1. Click Microsoft Outlook 98, then select Remove.
  2. Complete the uninstallation. Restart your computer when setup is finished.

For Outlook 97:

  1. Click Office 97 Professional Edition, then click Remove.
  2. Choose Add/Remove, and uncheck the box beside Microsoft Outlook.
  3. Select Continue, and complete the uninstallation. Restart your computer when setup is finished.

Install Microsoft Fax

After you have removed Outlook, you can install Microsoft Fax. Follow these directions:

  1. Place the Windows 98 CD in your CD-ROM drive, and from the Windows 98 CD, select Browse this CD.
  2. Double-click Tools, then Oldwin95.
  3. Click Message, then US, and then double-click wms.exe.
  4. After this program has completed installing Windows Messaging, from the same folder, double-click awfax.exe. Restart your computer.
  5. To configure the Microsoft Fax service, see ARCHIVED: In Microsoft Outlook 97, 98, or 2000, or Exchange, how can I send or receive a fax? Make sure the Fax service is working before you reinstall Outlook.
  6. Reinstall Outlook if desired, and then restart your computer.

By default, Windows 98 does not install Fax, Windows Messaging, or Microsoft Mail Postoffice; these components are not part of the Windows 98 product. However, these programs are included on the CD so you can reinstall them if they become corrupted during an upgrade from Windows 95. Microsoft has not fully tested the use of these files on non-upgrade installations of Windows 98.

If you are using Windows 98 and did not uninstall Outlook before you installed Fax, you could receive the following error messages:

  • "The following unrecoverable error has occurred: Internal MAPI error: The information service cannot be added to the profile using the Inbox Setup Wizard. Contact your administrator."
  • "This program has performed an illegal operation and will be shut down." When you click the Details button, it may say "Outlook.exe caused an invalid page fault in module (unknown)."
