ARCHIVED: At IU, in Eudora for Windows, how do I read my Cyrus mail using IMAP?

This content has been archived, and is no longer maintained by Indiana University. Information here may no longer be accurate, and links may no longer be available or reliable.

Note: If you use Eudora at Indiana University, you must use Eudora 5.1 or later. IU's mail servers use Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) in conjunction with the IMAP protocol. Earlier releases of Eudora do not support SSL, while versions prior to 4.3 do not support IMAP.

Configuring Eudora

To set up a new Personality (Eudora's term for account configuration settings), from the Tools menu, choose Personalities. Then right-click anywhere in the Personalities window, and select New. This will begin the New Account Wizard.

Note: If you are setting up Eudora for the first time, the New Account Wizard will appear automatically.

Once the New Account Wizard is open, follow these directions to configure Eudora to read your Cyrus mail:

  1. Select Create a Brand New Email Account, and then click Next.
  2. Enter a name for your Personality, and then click Next.
  3. For "Your Name:", enter your full name as you would like it to appear, and then click Next.
  4. For "Email Address:", enter your IU email address, and then click Next.

If you are unsure of your exact IU email address, see Your IU email address.

  5. For "Login Name:", verify that your username is correct, and then click Next.
  6. For "Incoming Server:", enter imap.iu.edu.
  7. For the type of server, choose IMAP, and then click Next.
  8. Leave the "IMAP Location Prefix" blank. Click Next.
  9. In the "Outgoing" or "SMTP" server field, type:

      mail-relay.iu.edu
  10. Select Allow Authentication. Click Next, then Finish.
  11. In the Enter Password dialog box, click Cancel, and in the Note dialog, click No. Before you can connect, you will need to enable SSL for the incoming server.

Enabling SSL

To enable SSL, follow these directions:

  1. From the Tools menu, select Personalities. Right-click the Personality you just created, and select Properties.
  2. In the Account Settings dialog, set "Secure Sockets when Sending" to Required, Alternate Port.
  3. Click the Incoming Mail tab and set "Secure Sockets when Receiving" to Required, Alternate Port. Click OK.

You should now be able to log in successfully by clicking Check Mail.

Troubleshooting SSL

If you are unable to connect, follow these additional steps to configure Eudora's initialization file by hand:

  1. Close Eudora and find the eudora.ini file. It will be located in one of two following places:
    • c:\Program Files\Qualcomm\Eudora\
    • c:\Documents and Settings\username\Application Data\Qualcomm\Eudora\

In place of username will be the name of the user whose Eudora settings you are editing. Right-click the file icon and choose Open With, then select Notepad.

  2. In the eudora.ini file, at the end of the "Settings" section, add the string IMAPSSLAlternatePort=993. Save these changes, and then open Eudora.

You can verify that the SSL certificate is in place by doing the following:

  1. From the Tools menu, select Personalities. Right-click the Personality that should contain the SSL certificate, and choose Properties.
  2. Click the Incoming Mail tab, and then click the Last SSL Info button. If you have not been granted an SSL certificate, you will see the following error message:
You have never checked mail using SSL connection with this personality since the last time you started Eudora.

Note: The exception to this is when you verify your SSL information by selecting Tools, then Options, then Checking Mail:; in this case, you will always see the above error.
