ARCHIVED: At IU, what options does my department have for selling items from its website, and whom do we contact about support issues?

This content has been archived, and is no longer maintained by Indiana University. Information here may no longer be accurate, and links may no longer be available or reliable.
Important:
Compliance with Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard (PCI DSS) is a requirement for all university departments that accept payment cards. Failure to comply with PCI DSS requirements can result in monetary fines and/or the loss of merchant status for your department and/or the university. For information about complying with PCI DSS requirements at Indiana University, see PCI DSS on the IU Office of the Treasurer website.

If your Indiana University department is interested in selling university-related goods and services on the web, the following descriptions will give you an idea of the various options for establishing a departmental electronic store and the support you can expect from the Office of the Treasurer's e-Business team. For more complete information about electronic commerce at IU, see Electronic Payments or Ecommerce.

The following information pertains to several possible e-commerce scenarios. After deciding which scenario best describes your situation, contact the Office of the Treasurer by phone at 812-855-0586 or via email at pmtcards@iu.edu, and confirm that the payment transactions under consideration are approved revenue-producing activities as defined in the IU policy Processing Revenue (FIN-TRE-VI-121).

Note:
In the scenarios below, www.indiana.edu is provided as an example; however, these scenarios apply equally to pages on www.iun.edu, www.iuk.edu, www.iupui.edu, and www.iue.edu.
  • I run a non-secure (http, non-SSL) web server and have my own storefront software.

The Office of the Treasurer requires that you run a secure (https, SSL) web server to conduct e-Business; see Get an SSL certificate for your web server For more, contact Web Services Support or the Ecommerce team.

  • I run my own secure web server and have my own storefront software.

The Office of the Treasurer provides the IUPayPlus web payment interface for integration with your storefront software. IUPayPlus can be used as a stand-alone application where the shopper enters the required information manually, or the information on the web form can be pre-loaded with data passed to it from the merchant's website.

  • My website is on www.indiana.edu, and I am willing to use the secure servers there. I don't have any storefront software and would like to use some provided by the university.

The Office of the Treasurer offers you the option of using the storefront software provided by Volusion. You can customize the appearance and behavior of Volusion to suit your needs. The Office of the Treasurer will provide consultation in the use of Volusion. This service is described in the documentation provided at Volusion.

  • My website is on www.indiana.edu, and I am willing to use the secure servers there. However, I don't want to use the university's Volusion storefront software. I want to install and use my own storefront software within my Information Provider account.

The Office of the Treasurer offers you the option of integrating the IUPayPlus web payment interface with your storefront software. The e-Business team can only provide consultation in the use of the IUPayPlus web payment interface, and cannot provide in-depth support for the installation of any other storefront software. You must choose a storefront product that does not require any modification to the web server in any way. The storefront software must also allow for the integration of the IUPayPlus web payment interface.

  • My website is on www.indiana.edu, and I have been using TransformEP with the secure central web servers to collect credit card payment information. I would like to continue to use TransformEP for my e-commerce.

The Ecommerce team incorporated the IUPayPlus functionality into TransformEP using a variant called TransformEPIUPayPlus, which provides enhanced security and support for a redirect URL that can return shoppers back to the merchant's server after the transaction has been processed.

    Note:
The Office of the Treasurer will not permit you to use any credit card payment collection method not approved by the IU Treasurer.
