Configure your computer to use DHCP (obtain IP address and DNS server automatically) at IU

To properly communicate on Indiana University networks, personal computers need to be configured to use DHCP. Unless the Support Center or your IT Pro advises otherwise, use the following instructions to configure your computer.

  • Windows:

    To ensure that your Windows 11 computer is set to use DHCP:

    1. Open Settings.
    2. Go to Network & internet.
    3. Go to Advanced network settings.
    4. Depending on how you are connecting, select Ethernet or Wi-Fi.
    5. Go to View additional properties.
    6. Next to "IP assignment", click Edit.
    7. Select Automatic (DHCP) and click Save.
    8. Next to "DNS server assignment", click Edit.
    9. Select Automatic (DHCP) and click Save.

    To ensure that your Windows 10 or Windows 8.x computer is set to use DHCP, select the Obtain an IP address automatically and Obtain DNS server address automatically options.

  • Mac:

    To ensure that your Mac computer is set to use DHCP, open the "Network" pane of System Preferences and select Using DHCP on the active network adapter:

    1. Open System Preferences and select Network.
    2. Depending on how you are connecting, select Ethernet or Wifi in the left pane.
    3. In the "Configure IPv4" drop-down box, select Using DHCP.
    4. Click Apply in the lower right of the "Network" window.
