ARCHIVED: Why did UITS switch from supporting Norton AntiVirus 2000 to Symantec/Norton AntiVirus Corporate Edition?

Norton AntiVirus 2000 (NAV 2000) installs with a one-year subscription to download virus definitions. To continue receiving virus updates using the LiveUpdate feature after the year is up, you must either uninstall NAV 2000 and reinstall it, or purchase another subscription. If you don't do either of these things, but simply leave NAV 2000 installed, its virus identification capabilities will freeze when the subscription runs out. Your computer will not be protected from newly invented viruses that spread after that.

From now on, Symantec/Norton AntiVirus Corporate Edition (SAV/NAV CE) is the only Symantec AntiVirus client available under IU's agreement with Symantec. It is the only version that will be available on future IUware CDs and from IUware Online. SAV/NAV CE provides full virus protection (when kept updated with the latest virus definitions) and doesn't expire. Consequently, LiveUpdate works with SAV/NAV CE indefinitely.

Note: The University Information Security Office (UISO) recommends that you run the latest version of Symantec virus protection software (available to IU students, faculty, and staff free of charge via IUware) for your operating system; See ARCHIVED: Safely upgrade security software in Windows 7 Be sure to upgrade safely, update your virus definitions daily, and scan your computer weekly. Check the software help for instructions.
