Software for managing bibliographic references available at IU
On this page:
Overview
At Indiana University, students, faculty, and staff have access to EndNote and EndNote Web for bibliographic citation management.
Citation management software helps you manage bibliographic references for annotating reading lists, compiling bibliographies, preparing lists of items in which you have been cited, or tracking works of interest. You can also use EndNote to automatically insert references while writing a paper.
Typically, you can input or import bibliographic information for sources, such as books and journal articles. Some electronic databases allow you to mark, download, or email records, and then transfer the records to the bibliographic management software.
The software will take the references and automatically format them in accordance with the style guidelines you choose (for example, MLA, APA). You can incorporate the formatted references into your paper, and then sort and search your references, detect and remove duplicates, and perform other tasks.
EndNote
EndNote, produced by Clarivate Analytics, allows you to collect references from databases, manage the references, and attach full texts of the bibliographic items. You may also format your references in a variety of styles to create bibliographies or to insert references in a paper or dissertation (Cite While You Write).
At Indiana University, students, faculty, and staff can download and install EndNote without fee from IUware:
For more about installing EndNote, including custom install (recommended) instructions and software updates, see the IU Libraries EndNote guide.
EndNote Web
All IU campuses except IU Southeast have a subscription to EndNote Web. Students, faculty, and staff can create free EndNote Web accounts at https://www.myendnoteweb.com.
At IU Bloomington, to create your account while off campus (without VPN), use the IU Bloomington Libraries' proxied URL.
EndNote Web lets you create EndNote libraries on the web. It includes many, but not all, of the features of EndNote. Because these libraries are web based, you can access them anywhere. With EndNote Web, you can:
- Share libraries with colleagues
- Upload records from your desktop EndNote libraries into EndNote Web libraries
- Download records directly from EndNote Web into desktop EndNote
- Save records from EndNote Web for import into desktop EndNote libraries
- Prepare papers with the Cite While You Write function
