ARCHIVED: At IU, in Outlook 2000, how do I read my Cyrus mail using IMAP?

To retrieve your email in Outlook 2000 using the IMAP protocol, you must run Outlook 2000 in Internet Mail Only mode, as the Corporate or Workgroup mode does not support IMAP.

If you need to keep Outlook 2000 in Corporate or Workgroup mode to access your IU Exchange account, and you also need to access an IMAP account, you can either upgrade to Outlook 2002 or 2003, which can support both an IMAP account and an Exchange account simultaneously, or use a separate mail client for your IMAP mail, such as Outlook Express.

Using the Internet Connection Wizard

Microsoft Outlook 2000 uses the Internet Connection Wizard to help you configure your email accounts. If you've never used Outlook 2000 for email, the Internet Connection Wizard should start the first time you launch Outlook. In this case you may skip to step 3 below. If you've already configured your account and wish to reconfigure or add another account (or if the Internet Connection Wizard fails to start), you will need to manually start the Internet Connection Wizard as follows:

  1. From the Tools menu, select Accounts....
  2. Click Add, and then select Mail... to start the Internet Connection Wizard.
  3. You will first be prompted for your "Display name". Enter your full name, and then click Next.
  4. In the "Email address:" field, enter your Indiana University email address and click Next.

If you are unsure of your exact IU email address, see Your IU email address.

  5. For the incoming mail server type, select IMAP. For the name of your incoming mail server, type imap.iu.edu. Click Next.
  6. In the "Outgoing" or "SMTP" server field, type:

      mail-relay.iu.edu
  7. Type your username. If you wish the system to remember your password (recommended only for physically secure computers), enter your password. Otherwise, deselect Remember Password. Leave Log in using Secure Password Authentication unselected. Click Next.
  8. To the question "Which method do you want to use to connect to the Internet?", select an option as follows:
    • Choose Connect using my phone line if you wish to dial in automatically when you start Outlook 2000.
    • Choose Connect using my local area network (LAN) if your computer has a direct Ethernet connection.
    • Choose I will establish my Internet connection manually if you usually connect to the Internet before you start Outlook 2000.

  9. Click Next, then Finish, and then Close. If you are prompted to download the folder list for the IMAP account, click No, because you first need to make sure SSL encryption is enabled.
  10. To enable SSL, from the Tools menu, select Accounts.... Select the account you just created.
  11. Click Properties, and then click the General tab. If you wish to give the account a different name, under "Mail Account", enter a name such as Work Email or My IMAP Account.
  12. Click the Advanced tab, and under "Incoming server (IMAP):" and "Outgoing server (SMTP):" check This server requires a secure connection (SSL). Be sure to check the box for each server.
  13. Click the Servers tab, and under "Outgoing Mail Server", select My server requires authentication.
  14. Click OK, and then Close. When you close the Internet Accounts dialog box, you will be asked if you wish to download folders from the mail server you just added. Click Yes.
  15. You will be prompted for your password (if you did not select Remember Password).
  16. In the folder list in the left pane, you will see a set of Local Folders and a set of folders for each account you have set up. To read new mail for an account, click Inbox under the account name.

Don't save items to the Local Folder structure unless you want them saved only to the computer you are using at that time. Once you save an item to the Local Folder structure, the item is not accessible from the server or from other computers.
