ARCHIVED: Using attachments

This content has been archived, and is no longer maintained by Indiana University. Information here may no longer be accurate, and links may no longer be available or reliable.

Email attachments can include such items as sound, video, or picture files; documents produced with word processing software; PDF files; and many other types of files. When such files are sent via email, they are attached to a normal email message. How you send and open attachments depends upon your mail software.

Unfortunately, email attachments are a primary means of virus transmission, so exercise extreme caution when opening them. Never open attachments from unknown senders, and scan attachments from people you know with antivirus software before opening them.

The Imail and Umail services are hosted and maintained by outside partners (Microsoft and Google). For help using these services, see ARCHIVED: At IU, where can I find help documentation for Imail or Umail?.

For help while using Microsoft 365 applications, you can often press F1 or click the question mark on the upper right. For more, see Get help with Microsoft 365 software.
