Due to enhanced security features in Exchange Online, digital signatures are no longer required at IU; however, digital signatures will continue to work as expected if you wish to continue using them.

Once your certificate expires, you will be unable to send or encrypt email using your certificate. All old sent mail will display a message saying, "There is a problem with this digital certificate" to indicate the certificate is expired (some mail clients may also display a visual indicator, such as a red line); however, all old mail will still be readable by all parties.

To renew your certificate, you will need to know the passphrase you created when you originally requested your certificate. If you don't know it, instead follow the instructions in Get an S/MIME client certificate for digital email signatures at IU to request a new certificate.
