Examity for IU students


Examity is an online proctoring service that allows online and distance learners to take exams without needing to schedule an on-campus visit and proctor.

Cost of using Examity

During summer session 2020, students will not be charged for the use of Examity in any courses.

System requirements

To take a proctored exam using Examity, you'll need the following:

  • A computer (PC, Mac, or Chromebook), a camera, and a microphone. Both built-in and external cameras and microphones are acceptable. To test your webcam, visit https://webcamtests.com/.
  • A location with a sufficient internet connection and at least 2 Mbps upload and download speed. To test your internet speed, visit http://www.speedtest.net.
  • Chrome or Firefox. Examity will only run on these two browsers.

Access the dashboard

To access the Examity dashboard:

  1. Log into Canvas, and navigate to your course.
  2. In the course navigation menu, select Modules.
  3. Click Examity.

From the Examity dashboard, you can create or edit your profile; schedule, reschedule, or cancel an exam; or begin an exam.

Complete your profile

Before you can schedule an exam, you'll need to complete your user profile:

  1. On the Examity dashboard, select My Profile.
  2. Enter your time zone.
  3. Use your webcam to take a picture of your government-issued photo ID.
    For identity verification purposes, you will need to bring this photo ID with you every time you take an exam.
  4. Select and answer three unique security questions.
  5. Enter your keystroke biometric signature.

Run a computer requirements check

After you've completed your profile, UITS strongly recommends that you run a computer requirements check. To do so, click Computer Requirements Check at the top right of the "My Profile" page. Run this check on the same computer you will be using to take the exam.

Schedule an exam

To schedule an exam:

  1. On the Examity dashboard, click Schedule Exam.
  2. From the drop-down menus, select your instructor, course, and exam name.
  3. Select your preferred date and time.
    If you are scheduling less than 24 hours in advance of your desired testing time, you must select the On-Demand scheduling option.

Reschedule or cancel an exam

To reschedule or cancel an exam:

  1. On the Examity dashboard, click Reschedule/Cancel.
  2. Select the exam you want to reschedule or cancel from the menu.

Take an exam


UITS recommends that you arrive at least 15 minutes prior to the start of an exam. This allows ample time to connect with your proctor and to troubleshoot any technical issues that may arise.

The time it takes you to connect to proctor support and complete the authentication process does not count towards your exam duration.

To take an exam using Examity:


Beginning on Monday, November 2, 2020, students will need to install a browser extension before taking a test. If you are an instructor, make sure your students are aware of the change.

  1. On the Examity dashboard, click Start Exam.
  2. On the "Start Exam" page, click the link to add the Examity extension to your browser.
  3. Wait for the notification that the extension has been added.
  4. Click Connect to Proctor.
    You'll need to disable your pop-up blocker to be able to connect with proctor support.
  5. Proctor support will walk you through the authentication process. You will be asked to:
    1. Verify your identity: Hold your photo ID in front of your webcam, so that the proctor can see both your name and photo clearly.
    2. Review the exam rules.
    3. Show your desk and workspace: The proctor will ask you to complete a 360-degree room pan and desk sweep with your webcam, to ensure your workspace is clear of any materials unauthorized by your instructor.
  6. Answer the security question.
  7. Type your unique biometric signature as per your profile setup.
  8. Agree to the user agreement and exam rules.
  9. Click Begin Exam. Your proctor will use the extension to enter the password for you, and then you may begin.
    If you have issues with the browser extension, your proctor may request keyboard access to manually enter the password.
