IU REDCap two-factor authentication options

Logging into IU REDCap requires two-factor authentication (sometimes called two-step login), an additional layer of security that verifies your identity through your username, passphrase, and a device that you own or a piece of information that only you should know.

After you successfully log into IU REDCap, choose one of three authentication options:

You will only have to do this once every 24 hours if you check Don't prompt me with two-step login on this computer for 24 hours.

Duo

If you are an IU employee or affiliate, log into IU REDCap and select Duo. For help, see Help for Two-Step Login (Duo).

If you see an "Access Denied" error message saying that your username cannot be authenticated with Duo Security, you will need to select a different authentication option (that is, email or Google Authenticator).

Note:
Duo for IU REDCap is separate from Duo for CAS. You won't be able skip two-step authentication even if you are already logged into another IU system. The same applies when accessing other IU systems after logging into IU REDCap using Duo.

Automatic Duo Push/Call

If you've enabled automatic Duo Push/Call for Two-step Login (Duo), you won't have to select Duo when you log into REDCap. The system will automatically send an authentication request, either via push notification to your Duo Mobile app or via a phone call to your device (depending on which you've selected). The REDCap two-step verification screen will automatically close on its own.

Email

If you haven't enabled Duo or you're outside the IU system:

  1. Log into IU REDCap and select Email.

You will receive a verification code via email to your REDCap account. The message (titled "REDCap 2-step login") will come from the primary email address listed in your REDCap account.

  2. Copy the verification code, paste it into the "Enter your verification code" window, and then click Submit to log into IU REDCap.

Google Authenticator

Google Authenticator is a mobile app that generates authentication codes and is available for most devices (for example, iPhone, iPad, Android). To use Google Authenticator, you must first log in using the email authentication option.

To enable Google Authenticator:

  1. Log into IU REDCap and select Email (see above).
  2. Enter the verification code from your email message and click Submit.
  3. On the far right of the IU REDCap landing page, select My Profile.
  4. In the "Edit Your User Profile" window, click Set up Google Authenticator for two-step login.
  5. Download the Google Authenticator app to your mobile device from the Google Play Store or Apple App Store.
  6. Open the app and scan the QR code to add the IU REDCap account.
