ARCHIVED: If I use file-sharing software, how can I keep my computer secure?

Malicious software (malware) such as viruses, worms, and spyware can be spread through file-sharing programs. If you install a file-sharing program, your computer has a higher risk of infection. Also, many programs shared through these networks are infected with malware, or are malware in disguise.

The best way to avoid malware via file-sharing programs is to refrain from either installing or using them. If you do choose to use such programs, do not install software that you find when using them. Also, avoid downloading shared files with extensions such as .exe, .com, .bat, .app, .sh, or any other unexpected extension.
