Note:
To complete these procedures, you must be assigned a role having the necessary permissions. If you're not sure what your role is, see the "Role" column in the Roster tool. For permissions, see ARCHIVED: What can I do in read-only Oncourse?
Warning:
Once grades have been entered, you must delete all grades in order to change the grade entry or grade type. If you attempt to change either one after you enter grades, you will be prompted to export your gradebook or delete grades before you can change the Gradebook setup.

Changing the grade entry

You can choose to grade using points, percentages, or non-calculating grades. Non-calculating grades can be traditional letter grades, or any other text entry up to eight characters, such as "absent" or "present". If you choose to enter your grades as letter grades, Oncourse will not calculate grades for you.

  1. In your site's menubar, click Gradebook.
  2. Click Gradebook Setup.
  3. Under "Grade Entry", select your preferred grade option.
  4. Make any other changes you wish to the "Gradebook Items Display" or "Categories & Weighting" options.
  5. When you are finished, click Save Changes.

Changing the grade type and grade scale

You can modify the grade type and, if you choose to enter your grades as points or percentages, you can modify the grade scale that will be used to convert percentages to final grades for the course.

Note:
For sites created on or after June 3, 2010, the default grade scale has changed, but if you import Gradebook settings from an earlier semester, the grade scale of the older site will override this default. See ARCHIVED: The default grade scale in Gradebook.
  1. In your site's menubar, click Gradebook.
  2. Click Course Grade Options.
  3. Under "Grade Conversion", in the drop-down list next to "Grade Type", choose a grade type, and then click Change Grade Type.

You can select one of four grade types in the Gradebook:

    • Letter Grades
    • Letter Grades with +/-
    • Satisfactory/Fail
    • Honors/High Pass/Pass/Fail
  4. In the table below "Grade Type", you can edit the grade scale by changing the percentage values in the corresponding text boxes.
  5. When you are finished, click Save.
