Add UDOIT to a Canvas course

Note:

The Universal Design Online Content Inspection Tool (UDOIT) was retired September 22, 2023. Ally is available for use in Canvas courses; to learn more, see Ally instructor guide and Ally alternative formats for students.

The Universal Design Online Content Inspection Tool (UDOIT) is an accessibility auditing tool for Canvas. If UDOIT is not in the course navigation menu, you can add it by completing the following steps:

  1. Select Settings from the course navigation sidebar in your Canvas course.
  2. Click the Navigation tab at the top of the page.
  3. Locate the UDOIT link from the list provided, and click the three vertical lines to the right of the link.
  4. Click the + Enable button.
  5. Save. UDOIT is now enabled in your Canvas course.

Run a UDOIT scan

To scan a Canvas course for accessibility:

  1. Open the course you would like to scan.
  2. In the navigation menu on the left, select UDOIT.
  3. If this is your first time using UDOIT, you will be prompted to authorize the application. Click Authorize.
  4. Under "Select Content", you can choose to have All content scanned, or select individual items. Selecting only one or two content types at a time will shorten the scan time.
  5. Click Run Scanner. The scan can take several moments. Scan time will depend on the size of your course.
  6. After the scan is completed, you'll see a report of errors and suggestions.
  7. If you want to save a copy of the report, click Save Report as PDF.
