At IU, how do I use the Scholarly Data Archive web interface?

On this page:

Introduction

The Indiana University Scholarly Data Archive (SDA) web interface lets you access, move, and manage your files using any web browser that supports secure (SSL) connections. Access the web interface at:

  https://www.sdarchive.iu.edu/

If prompted, log in with your Network ID username and passphrase.

When you connect to your account, the web interface displays your SDA folders and files in a typical file system directory structure, along with the size of each item (in bytes) and the date it was last modified. Items are listed in chronological order, with the most recently modified items at the bottom. (You cannot alter the order in which items are displayed.)

Note: For information about other methods of accessing the SDA, see At IU, how do I access the SDA?

To open any folder, click its name.

To return to the parent directory (after opening a folder), at the top of the directory listing, click Up One Level.

Note:
  • Do not use your browser's Back button to navigate up the directory tree; always use Up One Level.
  • You cannot open a folder if you do not have the required permissions. For example, in a group account, the account owner may use Access Control Lists (ACLs) to restrict access to certain folders. Likewise, if you click Up One Level from the top level of your account (e.g., /hpss/b/k/bkenobi), you'll land in the parent directory containing links to SDA accounts belonging to other users whose usernames have the first two characters in common with yours (e.g., /hpss/b/k). If you do not have the permissions required to access a folder (e.g., access is restricted by an ACL, or the folder represents an account that does not belong to you), clicking its name will have no effect.
  • If you do navigate up a level from the top directory in your account (e.g., hpss/b/k/bkenobi, and land in the parent directory containing links to SDA accounts belonging to other users who have the first two characters of your username in common (e.g., /hpss/b/k), you may not be able to return to your account. In such a case, you may see the following error message displayed in red:
  • There was an error while loading the data. Your ticket might be expired. Please create a new ticket and try again! To create a ticket, clear your browser cache and go to https://www.sdarchive.iu.edu

Clearing your browser's cache should allow you to log back into your account via the SDA web interface. (For instructions, see Clearing your web browser's cache, cookies, and history). If you have trouble, try clearing your browser's cache, closing any open windows, and restarting the application before accessing SDA web interface.

Creating folders

To create a new folder:

  1. Navigate to the directory (i.e., open the folder) in which you want to create the new folder.
  2. In the top left, click New Folder.
  3. In the Make a New Folder dialog box, enter a folder name, and then click Create Folder.
  4. If the folder was created successfully, you'll see a green verification message (e.g., "New folder folder_name created successfully..."); any errors will be displayed in red (e.g., "folder_name already exists. Please provide a different name...").

At this point, you can enter another folder name, either to create another new folder or correct an error, or click Close to return to the directory listing, where your new folder(s) will be listed at the bottom.

Uploading files

To upload a file:

  1. Open the folder in which you want to save the uploaded file.
  2. In the top left, click Upload File.
  3. In the Upload File dialog box, click Choose File or Browse (depending on your browser) to access your local computer's file system and find the file you want to upload. Click the file to select it.
  4. Note:
You can upload only one file at a time. The file browser will not let you select more than one file (or a folder).
  5. To overwrite a file that already exists, click the Overwrite file if it already exists checkbox. Otherwise, skip to the next step.
  6. To start the upload, click Upload File. To cancel the upload, click Close.

After the upload is complete, the Upload File dialog box will close. You should see the newly uploaded file listed at the bottom of the current folder.

Renaming items

To rename items:

  1. Click the checkboxes to select the files and/or folders you want to rename.
  2. In the top right, click Rename.
  3. In the Rename files and folders dialog box, enter a new name in the provided text box for each item you selected.
  4. To complete the renaming, click Rename.
  5. If the item was renamed successfully, you'll see a green verification message (e.g., "old_folder_name successfully renamed to [new_folder_name]..."created successfully..."); any errors will be displayed in red.

At this point, you can correct any errors and click Rename again, or click Close to return to your directory listing.

Copying items

To copy files or folders:

  1. Click the checkboxes next to the items files and/or folders you want to copy.
  2. In the top right, click Copy.
  3. In the Copy files and folders dialog box, click the Target folder drop-down menu to reveal your options:
    • Select from Home: Click this option to reveal the Home Folders drop-down list. Click the Home Folders drop-down list to display the names of all folders stored in the top level (i.e., home directory) of your SDA account. Click the desired folder to select it as the target.
    • Note:
Subfolders stored within home directory folders will not be listed. To target such a folder, use the Specify Path option instead.
    • To Current Folder: Choose this option to create copies within the current folder.
    • Note:
This option won't allow you to copy an item to a subdirectory within the current folder. To target such a subdirectory, use the Specify Path option instead.
    • Specify Path: Click this option to manually specify the path to the folder in which the copies should be stored. In the "Folder Name" field, type the path of the target directory, relative to your home directory (e.g., folder1/folder1a/folder1b).
  4. To copy the selected items and store them in the target folder indicated, click Copy. To cancel the copy, click Close.
  5. If the items were copied successfully, you'll see a green verification message (e.g., "[file_name] copied to [target folder] successfully..."); any errors will be displayed in red. To return to your SDA account, click Close.

Moving items

To move files or folders from one folder to another within your SDA account:

  1. Open the folder where the items you want to move are stored.
  2. To select the items you want to move, click their checkboxes.
  3. In the top right, click Move.
  4. In the Move files and folders dialog box, click the Target folder drop-down menu to reveal the names of any subdirectories within the current folder. Click a subdirectory to select it as the target folder.
  5. Note:
Nested subfolders (i.e., folders located in subdirectories within the current directory) will not be listed. To target a nested subfolder, use the Specify Path option instead.

    Alternatively:

    • Click Select from Home to reveal the Home Folders drop-down list, and then click the Home Folders drop-down list to display the names of all subdirectories stored in the top level (i.e., home directory) of your SDA account. Click a subdirectory to select it as the target folder.
    • Click Specify Path to manually specify a path to the target folder; in the "Folder Name" field, type the path of the target directory, relative to your home directory (e.g., folder1/folder1a/folder1b).
  6. To move the selected items to the target folder indicated, click Move. To cancel the move, click Close.
  7. If the items were moved successfully, you'll see a green verification message (e.g., "[file_name] moved to [target folder] successfully..."); any errors will be displayed in red. To return to your SDA account, click Close.

Deleting items

To delete folders and/or files, click the corresponding checkbox for each item, and then, in the top right, click Delete. The Delete File/Folder dialog box will display your selections; if they are correct, click Delete. To cancel the deletion, click Close to return to the directory listing, and then click each item's checkbox to deselect it.

Note:
Deleting a folder also deletes its contents (i.e., all files and subdirectories). Before deleting a folder, make sure it does not contain any files or folders you want to keep.

If your items were deleted successfully, you'll see a green verification message (e.g., "folder_name deleted successfully..."). Click Close to return to the directory listing.
