Minimum expectations for accessible vended software or web applications

Vended software and web applications must be accessible. Reviewing the product's accessibility before purchasing it is part of your responsibility. At minimum, you should perform the following tests or request they are performed as part of a demonstration:

  • Operate the entire interface using only the keyboard: Unplug or disable the mouse and perform all expected actions using only keystrokes. Additional resource: 1-minute video demonstration of keyboard support
  • Vivid visual focus on interactive elements must be evident while operating with keyboard only.
  • Raise the text size to 200% without loss of content or functionality. Also, zoom in to 200% without loss of content or functionality. Additional resource: 1-minute video on content resizing with browser zoom
  • Verify the visual presentation of text and images of text has a color contrast ratio of at least 4.5:1. Exceptions to meeting this ratio are large text (greater than or equal to 18pt, or 14pt bold), incidental text or images, and logos.
  • Demonstrate how the application works using a screen reader (for example, JAWS or NVDA or VoiceOver).
  • Remove style sheets (CSS). The application should be fully functional when the style sheets are disabled.
  • Navigate to Help or the product accessibility statement link from within the application. Demonstrate where a user finds accessibility related information and features, including how a user contacts product support.
