Note:
To complete these procedures, you must be assigned a role having the necessary permissions. If you're not sure what your role is, see the "Role" column in the Roster tool. For permissions, see ARCHIVED: What can I do in read-only Oncourse?

In the Gradebook tool, you can set up your gradebook to drop certain grades within a category. For instance, you could drop the lowest quiz score, keep only the three highest of ten homework assignments, or drop both the lowest and highest score among peer evaluations of a group project in order to focus on the median scores.

The steps for all of these scenarios are similar; adapt these instructions as necessary.

To drop the lowest grade in a category:

  1. In your site's menubar, click Gradebook.
  2. Near the top, click Gradebook Setup.
  3. In the "Categories & Weighting" section of the form, choose either Categories or Categories & Weighting.
  4. In the text box that appears, type a name for the category you're adding. To create more than one category, click Add a Category.
  5. Check Enable Drop Lowest. The "Drop Lowest" and "Item Point Value" columns appear.
  6. In the "Drop Lowest" field next to the desired category name, type the number of items you wish to drop from that category. For instance, to drop only the lowest item, type 1.
  7. In the "Item Point Value" field, enter the value you would like to assign to each item in this category.
    Note:
All items in a category from which you want to drop items must have the same point value. If you have pre-existing items in the category, you must first ensure that they are already of the same value, and enter that value in the "Item Point Value" field. If your pre-existing items have differing values, the "Item Point Value" field will remain locked, and you will be unable to click in it.
  8. When you are finished, click Save Changes.
